This week’s travel theme challenge from Ailsa on Where’s my backpack http://wheresmybackpack.com/2012/06/29/travel-theme-art/ was about art and how it can restore your spirits. For this subject I chose the sculptures in Skokie Northshore Channel Park.
First I have to say that I am definitely not a great fan of modern art whether it be painting or sculpture but there was something about these creations that seemed to lift the spirits of what might otherwise have been a rather dull (no flowers!) and uninteresting park area.
Sculpture Park runs for 2 miles along the north channel of the Chicago River through Skokie, Illinois, and is the setting for more than 60 sculptures by local, national and internationally known artists. Most of the pieces form a permanent collection but some of the work is for sale.
The park runs a free in-school program which includes a slide presentation, an on-site tour of the sculptures led by specially trained docents and post-tour projects for students in their classroom.
Although there are very few of these pieces that I actually like, still I think they do give the park purpose and meaning, opening our eyes to a facet of creative art that we might otherwise disregard.
